Compost Giveaway Distributes 1,500 Bags of Compost
Published on May 19, 2025
On May 17, the City hosted a Compost Giveaway, distributing 1,500 bags of WM EarthCare Homegrown Compost, made from Bay Area yard trimmings and residential food scraps.
Why Compost?
It is now the law (SB 1383) to compost food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste to prevent organic material from going to landfill where it decomposes and produces methane. Using compost can also decrease water usage through moisture retention during droughts.
Compost Hub
For community members that were not able to pick up bags of compost at this last giveaway, the Albany Compost Hub at Gill Tract offers free, self-serve compost to all visitors, open every Sunday 12-4pm. Visitors should bring their own buckets or bags to take compost home, or borrow one of the burlap sacks available at the Hub. The Hub is funded by the City of Albany. Visit www.albanyca.gov/compost for more information.
