Some of my earliest memories of political activism are of picketing outside the Albany Safeway in support of the United Farm Workers. No one I knew ate table grapes—a small but impactful gesture demonstrating our commitment to justice and the dignity of workers.

Through the leadership of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, Gilbert Padilla, and others, the United Farm Workers was founded, bringing national attention to the struggles of those laboring in the fields to put food on our tables. That movement continues today, proactively championing legislative and regulatory reforms for farm workers, including overtime pay, heat safety standards, pesticide protections, and other essential safeguards. The UFW also remains a leader in the national movement for immigration reform.

Many streets, schools, and public spaces have been named in honor of Cesar Chavez. This recognition affirms not only his legacy, but also the broader movement, contributing to a growing acknowledgment of Latino culture and its vital role in our communities. It is important to reevaluate these honors in light of the serious claims against him, ensuring that public recognition aligns with the values we seek to uphold.

The deeply troubling allegations against Cesar Chavez cannot be ignored. We owe a debt of gratitude to the women—especially Dolores Huerta—who have come forward to share their experiences. Their bravery must serve as a beacon of hope for others seeking accountability and healing.

We must remain dedicated to upholding the dignity of all workers and fighting for their rights and well-being. Additionally, we must ensure the creation of safe and compassionate spaces for survivors of abuse—especially women—so they can find support, healing, and redress.

These truths are not in conflict, but rather intertwined. They call on us to stand in solidarity with all workers, protect the rights of our immigrant neighbors, and ensure that every individual can live and work free from abuse and exploitation. The fight for justice, dignity, and accountability is ongoing—and ours to carry forward.
