Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

2024 MLK Banner.png Observed annually on the 3rd Monday in January, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. This year the holiday will be observed on Monday, January 15 – which coincides with the actual day of Dr. King’s birth on January 15, 1929.

This day is an opportunity to ask ourselves:

  • What are we doing for others?
  • How do we support and give to our community?

We can honor Dr. King’s legacy by making a commitment to serve our community. You don’t have to serve on January 15. You can COMMIT to serve any day of the year. What matters is the commitment. Our goal is to support lasting bonds between individuals and the larger community. Together we can create the Beloved Community that Dr. King envisioned. In Dr. King’s words, “the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.”

Join a City Advisory Body

Advisory Bodies provide decision making information to the City Council regarding City policies and programs and are a great way to get involved with your community.

There are a total of 12 active advisory bodies to the City Council. They help build community consensus, facilitate study of critical issues, guide implementation of programs, and assess the alternatives regarding issues of community concern within the Advisory Body’s scope of responsibility. The City Council considers a variety of factors when acting on policy, programs and projects. Information provided by Advisory Bodies to the City Council including pro/con analysis provides for informed decision making.

The majority of appointments to Advisory Bodies are individual appointments by each Council Member. Additionally, some advisory bodies include a member appointed as a whole by the City Council, and also by the Board of Education.
