The Albany Ohlone Greenway is an approximately 1-mile linear park running the length of the city, from El Cerrito near Brighton Avenue to Berkeley near Gilman. The park offers exercise equipment, seating areas, public art, and open green space — great for a quiet break or catching up with friends. Visitors can explore on foot along tree-lined paths or by bike on the Ohlone Greenway, a regional shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Ohlone Greenway follows the route of the Santa Fe railroad, which first ran through the area in 1904. The opening of the Bay Bridge in 1936 contributed to a long decline in freight traffic, and the line eventually transferred its freight operations to the Southern Pacific in 1978. The following year, the railway transferred the land to the cities along its route. In Albany, BART's Richmond Line runs parallel to the old Santa Fe right-of-way along an elevated trackway, allowing the Ohlone Greenway to extend beneath it.
